14 things you should know before dating a Scottish guy

I'm hoping to meet and make friends with local folks during my trip in September. I'll be traveling alone and am wondering what the general etiquette for talking with strangers is. I'm guessing pubs are the best places. Is it customary to sit at the bar if you want a chat vs. Any faux paus to watch out for? I could suggest you simply chat to people at bus stops.

Not necessarily a way to make friends, but certainly a way to get to know the local psyche. Most places, you stand at a bar if you're lucky you get a stool or sit at a table.

Standing at a bar is more open to banter with next door neighbours. Scots are generally friendly and will chat away especially Glaswegians, they say if you stand at a bus stop long enough you'll get someone's life story! As soon as people hear your American accent they'll want to talk to you and ask how you are enjoying your visit and what sites you have seen, I know that's what I always do whenever I have Americans in my Cab.

I suppose in a bar is fine but just be careful you don't come across as wanting chatted up in a romantic sense!!!! If you ask someone for directions, in, say, Glasgow , you could easily get their medical or life history, as well as detailed directions. If you give us an idea of what areas you are going to then people might be able to give you suggestions for good particular places. The different cities in Scotland tend to have different types of people so someone from different areas might be able to give you tips.

Whenever I've traveled alone, I always go for the "sit at the bar" approach. Folk might naturally ask you where you're from, where you are travelling etc. If they don't, and you want to start a conversation, start out by asking for advice as a tourist - everyone loves giving their opinion! Even if it's not a genuine query, it will get the ball rolling.

Folk will tell you what buses to get, offer their opinion on whether it's worth visiting, start telling you what else to see in Leith etc and there you have it - a topic of conversation to get started. Eat drink coffee outside a cafe or restaurant and often people will chat which they won't do inside. Ask the way, advice on other places to eat will often encouage people. If someone is sitting resting or looking at a view it is easy to strike up a conversation.

Without being pushy though as they may be enjoying the peace and quiet ;- You could ask if there are any other good walks etc. I've found people don't want to talk so much in railway stations, concentrating on getting their seat but once on will chat.

Whereas bus stops people are happy to help or pass the time. Pubs is an awkward one. People have their own groups, familiar ground but start by asking advice even if you don't need it and that will open the way to people who would like to converse.

Pubs could be a good place but you need to choose carefully. You need a traditional 'locals' pub where regulars prop up the bar. These are getting less common, and are not usually the big establishments on the major roads.!

One to avoid is Lifts Elevators for some reason Brits do not speak whilst in Lifts!!!! Even if they know each other!!!! What you have to be wary of in Scotland is accents, they can vary enormously, especially in "Glesga". Be patient as we can have varying speeds of delivery, sometimes akin to "joined up writing". I would advise, if a particular phrase or saying "stumps" you, ask for it to be repeated and then practice it out loud.

You never know, you might actually leave with an accent. Log in to get trip updates and message other travelers. Watch this Topic. Browse forums All Browse by destination. Scotland forums.
