How to look for old facebook posts

Facebook drives me crazy! Sometimes it just hides half of them, which is even more confusing. How do I find an old Facebook post or status update? It used to be that you could simply go to your Facebook profile page and scroll down and down and down and see every post gradually appear. Not efficient, but still a solution to the problem of finding older posts, photos, etc. But it seems like Facebook always wants to show those items that garnered the most engagement that is, comments, likes and shares and hide those that have the least.

Finding Old Posts on the Facebook Timeline

If you regularly use your business Facebook page to post status updates, new pictures and other content, older posts will quickly get lost on your page's timeline. If you need to find an older post, you can use Facebook's Activity Log to filter posts by the month, year and type of update.

Facebook remembers all of your posts dating back to when you created the page. You can also jump to a specific year and month on your timeline without the Activity Log, though the Activity Log has more features. Select the "Activity Log" option.

Choose the year you wrote the original post using the dates on the right side of the Activity Log. With the proper year expanded, choose the month you posted the update. Click the "All" drop-down to choose a specific type of activity, further narrowing your results.

Scroll through the activity log until you find the desired date. With the month and year narrowed down, finding the correct date becomes much easier. Right click on the button See Older Messages… and open the link in a new tab or window. Your messages are indexed from 1, 2, 3 … from most recent to least recent.

How do I get them all back? All your previously posted material is still there, but you have to find the menu option to display it. To find the missing stories, start scrolling down your Timeline page.

Until now, Facebook was pretty good about keeping your posts private. But all that is about to change. Search "New Statesman" or "Eastenders", and the site will soon mine all posts with "public" privacy settings to throw up any relevant posts. Whether this affects you has a lot to do with your privacy settings, as anyone with a draconian hold on their profile will have already set most posts to "private".
