James Mason plays a hitman in this tense, atmospheric thriller from the director of The Third Man. Johnny James Mason is the idealistic leader of an illegal organization who is on the run after escaping from prison. An attempt to hold up a linen mill goes wrong and Johnny is badly wounded. After falling from the getaway car, Johnny is forced to hide in the city and finds himself in bad company.
As the police hunt him down, Johnny searches for Kathleen, the woman who loves him. Carol Reed brought the intense and claustrophobic story to the screen with characteristic economy and visual style. Odd Man Out is a British classic from that fits the film noir definition in almost every respect. It's one of the milestones of its era, highlighted by what is arguably the best performance in the illustrious career of James Mason, here playing the leader of an underground Irish rebel organisation, who is seriously wounded when a payroll heist goes sour.
Left for dead by his accomplices on the streets of Belfast he's forced to hide wherever he can find shelter and as his gunshot wound gradually drains his life away, his lover Kathleen Ryan struggles to locate him before it's too late.
Although the IRA and Belfast are never mentioned by name, this film was a daring and morally complex examination of Northern Ireland's "troubles" and the compelling tragedy hasn't lost any of its impact.
A study of conscience in crisis and the bitter aftermath of terrorism, this was one of the first films to address IRA activities on intimately human terms. Political potency is there for those who seek it, but the film is equally invigorating as a riveting story of a tragic figure on the run from the law, forced to confront the wrath of his own beliefs in the last hours of his life.
It was this brilliant, unforgettable film that established the directorial prowess of Carol Reed, whose next two films The Fallen Idol and The Third Man were equally extraordinary. Verified Purchase. It is a lovely print, clear, crisp and with very good sound. What an extraordinary film! Neither my husband nor I had ever seen it before, and we were totally enthralled for the full minutes. The city is clearly Belfast, the organisation is the IRA, though neither is ever named.
By all the usual rules, Johnny should be a thoroughly unlikable and unsympathetic character, and the viewer should long for his capture.
But the reverse is true, as it begins to appear that softly-spoken Johnny is a prisoner of his role, his organisation, the expectations of his comrades and his own past. The film is also populated by a host of well-known British actors, some in very early non-speaking roles.
The performances are wonderful, the characters rich and varied. The rain turns to snow. The action is intense and desperate, time is running out. Our conclusion is that Carol Reed has produced not one, but two, masterpieces. This is emphatically, one of them. Plus it's Carol Reed's finest film. Could not wait to get a decent print on DVD, so I quickly ordered a Korean import that looks pretty good for this old film.
I have had that for a few years. My wish came true thanks to this Region B blu ray. I knew immediately I needed to purchase a region free blu ray player. Once I got one, this title was my first purchase. This is the best I have seen this movie look. The detail in the black and white picture is astounding! This blu ray blows away any other DVD version of this classic. The special features aren't the best, but I got this for this wonderful movie.
Wish more studios here in the states would release more classics like this on blu ray. I am so glad to have bought this region free blu ray player so I can purchase more titles from The Masters of Cinema series from Eureka also speaking of classics.
Now they are what we in the states compare to Criterion. They have released some really great classics on blu ray and they look amazing. This is a classic I will cherish for years to come. I've just watched most of this film on BBC2,having missed the first twenty minutes. I only switched the TV on to check the time for tonight's football match so fate played me right for once. From Cyril Cusack's defiant last words, through brilliant performances from Robert Newton, William Hartnell and the sheer artistry of F J McCormick to the lyrical and understated ending, this is a masterpiece.
Each vignette within the story is beautifully acted and sharply observed and each adds a subtle item to a catalogue of human decency and frailty. The darkness is pierced again and again with humour, especially in the scenes between FJM and Newton "Why don't you paint an owld jug and some apples like the other fellas?
James Mason has never been a favourite of mine but in this film one can see why Hollywood claimed him. It's a pity he didn't stay here with Mr Reed. I'm ashamed to say that I'd never heard of this film before, although I've watched films all my life.
I've always considered "Saturday Night And Sunday Morning" as the best British post war film, mainly for the brilliance of Albert Finney's performance, but this afternoon, I think I've changed my mind. I recently revisited "Odd Man Out" for the first time in 5 years, now reissued on Blu-ray and restored.
The film looks amazing! This is a personal favourite of mine. Produced at a boom time in the British Film industry, with both director Carol Reed and lead actor James Mason at the zenith of their creative powers. In my opinion this is one of the finest British films ever produced. Essentially it is a noir, following the man on the run theme, Robert Krasker's black and white cinematography is excellent creating a classic depiction of post-war Belfast unnamed.
Reed was always keen to use locations and the film does not disappoint; Belfast was used extensively. The Blu-ray transfer is good and I was pleased with the restoration. I would recommend this film to anyone who is interested in post-war British cinema as it is excellent.
The extras go on forever.

Frey Leonard H. The films studied, The Quiet Man and Odd Man Out have in common a background dimension rooted in Irish myth : for The Quiet Man the triangulation among the princess and the two men one senior, one junior competing for her ; for Odd Man Out the death of Ireland's archetypal hero Cuchulainn, as champion of Ulster. Leonard H. These two studies were prompted by a dual interest in classic Irish film and classic Irish literature. They do not pretend to be definitive but only suggestive of that coat of many colors some will say, forty shades of green that is worn by Irish culture. Beyond this, it is evident here that Irish myth and legend in its lights and darknesses may reach corners of the modern world that political and socio-economic thinkers might wish to see free of such.
